Melrose Senior Center.
Who:
The force behind this project is the Florida Institute for Workforce Innovation better known as “FIWI.”
What:
A Senior Center is a community facility that is a focal point for the organization and provision of a broad spectrum of services suited to the diverse needs and interests of independent older persons, which may include nutritional meals, health, mental, health, social, wellness, respite care, education services and recreational activities.
Why:
Melrose and the surrounding area have a high concentration of senior residents.
42% of Melrose area citizens are age 55 or older. And, there are 10,000 persons age 55 or older living within 10 miles of Melrose. Plus, this area has traditionally been underserved.
When:
Break ground Summer of 2009
Complete construction Winter of 2010
Open to the community Winter of 2010
Where:
Right here at 309 Bellamy Avenue (SR 26) in downtown Melrose. It'll be next door to the “FIWI” yellow house on the south side of the street.
Who's paying for this:
FIWI competed for and was awarded a $343,245 grant to construct this Senior Center. The grant is being provided by the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs.
